From September 2008 to March 2010, we are implementing an 18 month project titled 'Integrated Waste Management Facilities for Lamu Island', funded through the EU, facilitated by ReCoMAP. This project includes:
  • an improved waste management infrastructure
  • a large scale community sensitisation programme
  • encouraging income generating activities related to waste management

Who are we? Lamu Safi Group is a community based organisation, with a view to bettering our local Environment through education & implementing
practical projects in the sphere of waste management.

We are based in Lamu Town, on Lamu Island which is just off the North East Coast of Kenya. Lamu Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you are in Lamu, you will find our office on the north end of Lamu Seafront, between the Donkey Sanctuary and the County Council buildings.

We formed in September 2006, and currently have 38 members. We are registered as a Community Based Organisation with the Department of Social Services in Lamu.

Our aim is to make Lamu clean, and we do this through a series of methods:

  • by improving the waste management infrastructure to make it easier for the community to dispose of waste. We work alongside the County Council of Lamu and other Government bodies to achieve this
  • by providing a community sensitisation and awareness raising programme so that the community are aware of the importance of keeping Lamu clean, and the direct impact on them if they don't
  • by encouraging the setting up of income generating activities related to waste management by community members to improve livelihoods and alleviate poverty, whilst also improving the local environment
  • by encouraging the community to take part in making their environment clean, by getting involved in community clean up events

Many people in Lamu live in poverty. The links between Poverty and the Environment are complex, but according to the World Bank:

(1) poverty alleviation should not damage the environment of the poor, which would only substitute gains in one area for losses in another
(2) improving environmental conditions can help reduce poverty
